Abstention refers to the act of deliberately refraining from voting, participating in an action, or taking a position. It's a conscious decision to hold back, rather than actively opposing something with a "no" vote or supporting it with a "yes".

Historically, abstention has been particularly relevant in political contexts. In parliamentary procedures, members might abstain if they feel unable to support or oppose a motion due to conflicts of interest, lack of information, or a desire to maintain neutrality. For example, "Several senators chose abstention on the bill regarding campaign finance reform."

However, abstention isn't limited to politics. It can apply to any situation where you choose not to engage.
