To abstain means to deliberately refrain from doing something, especially an action that others are participating in. It implies a conscious decision to hold back, whether it's voting, eating, drinking, or expressing an opinion.

Historically, abstain carried strong religious connotations, referring to voluntary self-denial of pleasures or desires for spiritual reasons—like abstaining from food during a fast. This root meaning still exists; you might hear someone say they "abstain from worldly pleasures."

However, the word is most commonly used today in formal settings, particularly politics and organizational decision-making. A legislator or board member might abstain from voting on a bill or motion if they believe it presents a conflict of interest, or if they simply don't want to publicly take a position. In this context, abstaining usually means not casting a "yes" or "no" vote; it's a way of staying neutral while still being present.
