Pronunciation

UK

  • /zˈəʊn/

US

  • /ˈzoʊn/

Description

A zone is an area with a particular use, condition, or feeling. Think of the "danger zone" near heavy machinery, or a "time zone," which tells you what time it is in a part of the world. This word helps us talk about spaces that are set apart in some way. You might stay in your comfort zone, where you feel safe and relaxed, or move into a new zone that feels unfamiliar.

It is not always about a physical place. A "conflict zone" is an area where fighting is happening, and when someone is "zoned out," they are not paying attention to what is around them. The word comes from the Greek zōne, meaning "belt," which fits the idea of an area marked off from others.
