The word "wish" covers both the feeling of wanting something and the act of saying that want out loud. At its core, a wish is a hope or strong desire for something to happen. Sometimes the thing feels unlikely or hard to achieve, but not always. For example, "He wished he hadn't spent all his money" shows regret and a desire for a different past.
