The word "willy" has a colorful place in English, though it needs a bit of care. In British English especially, its best-known meaning is a colloquial and slightly childish word for the penis. It often sounds innocent compared with more vulgar terms, so it may appear in family talk, jokes, or speech aimed at children. Even so, it is still slang, and in many situations it can sound silly, awkward, or too informal.

Beyond anatomy, the word is also part of the common idiom "to get the willies" or "to give someone the willies." This describes that skin-crawling feeling of fear, discomfort, or nervousness. If a ghost story, an eerie noise, or a spider in the bath makes you shudder, you might say it gave you the willies. It is important not to confuse "willy" with the similar-sounding adjective "wily" (meaning crafty or clever in a tricky way) or the noun "wile" (a trick or scheme). "Willy" does not normally mean a prank or trick, so using it that way would sound mistaken.

Meanwhile, the separate phrase "willy-nilly" has a different history and means something like "whether one likes it or not" or "in a careless, unplanned way."
