A whiteout describes a weather condition in which visibility and contrast are severely reduced by falling or blowing snow. It happens when light reflects off the snow from all directions, including the ground, the sky, and the snow in the air, creating a bright, shadowless scene. In that setting, it becomes very hard to tell where the horizon is or where the land ends and the sky begins. Travelers, drivers, pilots, and anyone moving through open terrain can quickly become disoriented. To be caught in one can feel like being trapped inside a vast cloud of white.

The term also moved from the outdoors to the desk. Many people know "White-Out" or "white-out" as correction fluid used to cover ink mistakes on paper. From there, the idea spread into digital work and design. In these contexts, to white out part of an image or a line of text means to cover that area with white, hiding what was there before. It usually suggests visual covering rather than secure redaction, since the hidden information may still exist underneath in some form.

The force of the word lies in its sense of erasure. It suggests a loss of detail and the feeling that something once clear has been swallowed by blank whiteness. Whether it refers to a dangerous snow condition, a bottle of correction fluid, or the act of covering something with white on a page or screen, a whiteout is about visibility being taken away until only a blank surface seems to remain.
