Blizzards aren't limited to fresh snowfall. Ground blizzards are also possible, with powerful winds lifting old snow from the ground and turning it into a blinding, swirling blanket. These storms often bring dangerously low wind chills, greatly increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

You may come across famous events like the Schoolhouse Blizzard of 1888, when many families and children were caught off guard by a severe, fast-moving storm. Modern weather services still issue blizzard warnings for storms expected to meet severe criteria, often advising people to stay indoors and postpone travel.
