Have you ever heard someone breathe with a thin, whistling sound, as if air were being pushed through a very small gap? That sound is often a wheeze. It usually happens when the airways become narrow, often because of asthma, bronchitis, allergies, or another breathing problem. A person may wheeze while breathing, especially when they are sick or short of breath. It can happen after hard exercise too, but if it keeps happening, it is often a sign that something is wrong.

A wheeze is a high-pitched whistling sound made while breathing. It happens when air is forced through narrowed or obstructed airways in the lungs. Imagine blowing across the top of an empty bottle—that's very similar to the sound a wheeze makes!

Wheezing can be caused by many factors. Often, it is linked to chronic conditions like asthma, bronchitis, and allergies, or even to a temporary illness like the common cold. These conditions can cause swelling or mucus buildup in the airways, making them narrower and harder for air to pass through. Or, "The baby was wheezing and needed immediate medical attention." It is important to note that while occasional wheezing after extreme exertion isn't always a cause for alarm, persistent or severe wheezing should always be checked by a doctor. In a different context, the word can also describe a dry, gasping laugh or, in British English, a clever plan or trick.

So, whether it is a sign of exertion, illness, or a laboured laugh, a wheeze is a distinctive sound that suggests breathing is under strain: a thin whistle that tells you air is having a hard time getting through.
