Wakefulness describes the state of being awake and conscious, including both physical alertness and mental awareness. It is more than just the absence of sleep; it is an active condition in which your brain is engaged with the world around you. Think of a newborn baby experiencing everything for the first time: that intense sensory input demands complete wakefulness.

The term can be used in different contexts. In everyday language, we talk about regaining wakefulness after being drowsy or recovering from illness. In psychology and neuroscience, it is a key part of consciousness, studied alongside sleep cycles and brain activity. Prolonged, unwanted wakefulness, such as that experienced during severe insomnia or forced sleep deprivation, can have serious consequences for both physical and mental health.
