The waistband is the specific band of fabric at the top of trousers, skirts, shorts, or other garments that encircles the waist to secure the piece against the body. Though it seems like a simple component, it is a crucial element of both tailoring and fashion. It often contains stiffening material called interfacing to help it hold its shape, and it may feature buttons, snaps, or belt loops for added security.

Historically, waistbands have shifted in importance and style. In the Victorian era, they were often part of high-waisted designs cinched with wide belts to create a specific silhouette. By contrast, the low-rise fashion of the early 2000s placed waistbands closer to the hips, changing the garment's fit and look. While "waist" refers to your body, "waistband" refers to the part of the clothing that goes around it.
