The word "viol" refers to a family of bowed string instruments that flourished in Europe from the 15th through the 18th centuries. Although they may look a little like early relatives of the violin or cello, they are actually a distinct family of instruments. They later became less common as concert halls grew larger and musicians needed louder instruments, but viols are still cherished today by people who love early music.

What sets viols apart from the modern violin family? They typically have six or seven strings and feature frets, usually made from tied gut, along the neck. While the modern viola is a member of the violin family, the historical viol belongs to a different branch of musical history.
