Videotape refers to a method of recording video and audio on magnetic tape. Developed in the mid-20th century, it changed how people captured and shared moving images, offering an alternative to live television broadcasts and film.

At first, professionals in broadcasting used it for things like news reports and televised concerts. Later, videotape became popular for home recording with the arrival of VCRs (Video Cassette Recorders) in the 1970s and 1980s. Families recorded special events, saved programs to watch later, and even made their own amateur films. Formats like VHS and Betamax competed for dominance and became household names.

The term videotape can function as a noun, referring to the physical tape itself ("This videotape is damaged"), or as a verb, describing the act of recording ("Did you videotape the school play?"). It can also refer to the content recorded on the tape ("We found some hilarious old videotapes in the attic").

While it has largely been replaced by digital formats like DVDs, hard drives, and cloud storage, videotape still has some niche uses in archiving and older production workflows. Its main legacy, though, is cultural. It represents an earlier era of analog recording, when rewinding was essential, tracking errors were frustrating, and picture quality depended on the tape and the machine. The phrase "Be kind, rewind" became a well-known slogan from that time.
