The word "vestry" has deep roots in the history of the Christian Church, especially in Anglican and Episcopal traditions. At its core, it usually means a room in a church where clergy and other church workers prepare for services, keep vestments, and store useful items or records. The name is closely tied to vestments, the special robes worn during worship.

Historically, this room was often near the chancel or sanctuary, making it a convenient place to dress before a service and to keep robes, books, and other church materials. In many churches, it also became a place for practical discussions, record-keeping, and small meetings. Because church business was often handled there, the word later took on another meaning: it could also refer to the church's governing committee itself.

That is why "vestry" can describe either the room or, in some contexts, the group of lay members who help manage parish affairs. In American Episcopal use, for example, the vestry is often the elected board of a parish. In everyday church language, though, people often mean the room itself.

Today, a vestry may serve several purposes at once: a dressing room for clergy, a storage place for vestments and church items, a quiet office, or a meeting room for parish leaders. The exact use depends on the church, but the idea stays much the same: it is a small, functional place connected with the running of church life. You might hear that someone is "going to the vestry" before a service, or read about a decision made by "the vestry" of a parish. The word carries a sense of tradition and of the quiet, practical work that supports worship.
