The word "verbal" relates to words or language. It comes from the Latin verbum, meaning "word." In everyday use, however, it is very often used to mean "spoken" or "oral," especially when people want to contrast speech with writing.

Most commonly, "verbal" describes something expressed through speech. A "verbal contract," for example, is an agreement made orally rather than in writing (though legally, these can be harder to enforce!). Similarly, a "verbal description" uses words to paint a picture in the listener's mind. "He gave a detailed verbal account of the accident."

But "verbal" is not always just about speaking. It can also describe anything relating to language itself. A "verbal ability test" measures someone's skill with words, such as vocabulary and comprehension, whether the test is written or spoken. In theatre, a "verbal cue" is a word or phrase that tells an actor when to act. In grammar, "a verbal" can also mean a word formed from a verb but used in another way, such as a gerund or participle.

Furthermore, "verbal" can describe behavior expressed through words, like "verbal abuse." This highlights how powerful language can be—it can build up or tear down. So, while often associated with speaking, "verbal" encompasses anything connected to language—its expression, assessment, and even its potential for harm. It's a word that reminds us of the power held within our words.
