upload

B1
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˈʌpləʊd/

US

  • /ˈəˌploʊd/

Description

Imagine you've taken a great photo of your cat wearing a tiny hat. You want to share it with the world. That's where "upload" comes in. To upload means to move computer files, like photos, videos, or documents, from your device, such as a phone or laptop, to another place, usually a website or server on the internet.

Think of it like sending something up to the cloud. You might upload a video to YouTube, a document to Google Drive, or a picture to Instagram. It's how we share digital things and information with other people online. Sometimes you'll hear "download" as the opposite. That means bringing files from the internet to your device.
