unwrap

B1
verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ʌnrˈæp/

US

  • /ənˈræp/

Description

To unwrap something is to remove the paper, plastic, cloth, or other covering around it. We often connect it with gifts, like the excitement of opening a birthday present, but it is also used for everyday things. You might unwrap a package that came in the mail, a sandwich at lunch, or a bandage that has been wrapped around a hand. Sometimes people also use it in a looser way for slowly revealing something hidden, but the main idea is simple: taking away the outer covering so what is inside can be seen or used.
