The term "unweighted" describes something that is not adjusted by giving extra value or importance to certain parts. In most cases, it means that every item is treated equally. This idea appears most often in statistics, data analysis, surveys, and school grading, where an unweighted method gives the same importance to each data point or category unless a separate adjustment is added.

A classic example is an unweighted grade point average (GPA). This calculates a student's score on a standard scale, usually from 0 to 4.0, without giving extra credit for harder classes such as Advanced Placement or honors courses. In the same way, in public opinion polling, unweighted results are the raw responses as they were collected, before researchers adjust them to better match the wider population.

The word can also be used more broadly for anything meant to be judged without extra emphasis on one side over another. You might hear of an unweighted assessment of a situation, meaning the facts are being considered without special influence from outside pressure or prior opinion. In that sense, the word suggests equal treatment rather than a technical adjustment.

The opposite of "unweighted" is "weighted," where some factors are intentionally given more influence than others. Understanding this difference matters because it tells you whether you are looking at a raw result with equal treatment or at a result that has been adjusted to reflect different levels of importance.
