An untitled work, whether it is a painting, song, poem, film, or document, has not been given a name or heading. You often see this in art, where the creator may want the work to stand on its own without a label guiding your thoughts. Sometimes the name just has not been chosen yet. In other cases, leaving it untitled is a deliberate choice. The word can also describe a person who does not have a noble title.

The word "untitled" describes something that does not have a formal title, name, or heading. It is most commonly used for creative works such as paintings, songs, poems, books, films, or photographs when the creator has not given them a specific name. You might see a piece in a gallery called "Untitled" or "Untitled No. 3," which simply shows that no descriptive title was chosen.

This does not always mean the work is unfinished. Sometimes it is a deliberate artistic choice. By leaving a work untitled, the artist may want people to look at it or listen to it without being pushed toward one fixed meaning. In other cases, the title has simply not been decided yet.

Beyond the arts, the word is also used for ordinary documents, presentations, drafts, or sections that do not yet have a heading or file name. For example, a new document on your computer may appear as "Untitled" until you rename it. In writing, it can describe a chapter, section, or page with no heading.

There is also a less common use for people. An untitled person is someone who does not hold a rank of nobility such as "Lord," "Lady," "Duke," or "Earl." This meaning is much less common in everyday English than the one about works or documents with no title.
