"Unsocial" describes someone who does not enjoy or actively seek out the company of others. It suggests a real preference for being apart from the group, not just a quiet personality. A person described this way may find social activity tiring, uninteresting, or easy to do without.

The word goes beyond simple shyness. Shyness often involves fear or anxiety in social situations; someone unsocial may feel no fear at all. They just do not see much value in joining in. They are not necessarily rude or hostile, though they may seem distant or aloof. Picture an artist so absorbed in their work that the party in the next room hardly exists for them.

In many contexts, the word carries a slightly negative tone, because it can suggest that someone is not warm, open, or willing to join ordinary social life. Even so, it is usually milder than "antisocial," which often suggests active dislike, harm, or refusal. Context also matters. "Unsocial" has a very common use in the phrase "unsocial hours." This means working at times when most people are relaxing, sleeping, or spending time with family, such as late nights, early mornings, and weekends. So whether it describes a person who keeps apart from others or a nurse working through the night, the word points to life outside the usual social rhythm.
