The word "unruly" paints a picture of something that resists control or proper behavior. It comes from a form meaning "not ruled," and it carries a sense of wildness, disorder, and difficulty in managing. You might describe a crowd as unruly if people are loud, pushy, and hard to contain, like fans at a concert getting carried away.

Today, the word still suggests a lack of control. Sometimes it can hint at strong spirit or defiance, but it usually has a negative sense and suggests that order is missing. Whether it is a group of students, a patch of overgrown plants, a mass of messy hair, or even strong feelings, "unruly" points to something that will not stay calm, neat, or controlled without effort.
