The word "unpin" literally means to remove a pin or to take something away from a pinned position. At its core, it describes the act of freeing something that was fastened, attached, or kept in a special place. Picture a map pinned to a corkboard: unpinning it lets you take it down, move it, or put it somewhere else. The same idea works with sewing, where you might pin pieces of fabric together and then unpin them once you are ready for the next step.

In digital contexts, "unpin" is especially common. You can unpin a message, post, app, tab, or conversation when you no longer want it kept at the top or saved in a quick-access spot. After that, it usually returns to its normal place in the list, feed, or layout. The word does not usually mean deleting something; it means removing its special pinned status.
