unobtrusively

C2
adverb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ʌnɒbtrˈuːsɪvli/

US

  • /ˌʌn.əbˈtruː.sɪv.li/adverb

Description

Imagine a shadow slipping across the floor: it is there, but it does not make you look at it. That is what "unobtrusively" means. It describes doing something in a way that avoids notice and does not disturb anyone. A skilled spy might move unobtrusively through a crowd, and a considerate guest might leave a party unobtrusively, without making a big fuss. It is about blending in rather than standing out. Think of it as the opposite of being showy or intrusive.
