unmentioned

C2

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ʌnmˈɛnʃənd/

US

  • /ənˈmɛntʃənd/

Description

Something unmentioned has not been talked about or referred to. Imagine a family gathering where everyone avoids talking about Aunt Millie's recent mishap; that mishap is unmentioned. It does not necessarily mean it is unimportant, just not brought up. A detail can stay unmentioned by accident, and sometimes things are left unmentioned to avoid conflict or discomfort. Think of a detective story: the key clue might be something everyone has forgotten, or something no one has chosen to mention.
