twitter

verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /twˈɪtə/

US

  • /ˈtwɪtər/

Description

Originally, "twitter" meant the chirping of birds. It later became widely known as the name of the social media platform now called X, where users shared short messages called "tweets." You can think of it as a digital town square for quick thoughts and news. The word still keeps its older meaning too: the light, high sound birds make, as in "The garden was filled with the twitter of sparrows." It can also describe light, quick, nervous talk.
