trillionth

C2
nounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /trˈɪliənθ/

US

  • /trˈɪliənθ/

Description

Imagine counting all the way to one trillion. The item in that final spot is the one in the 1,000,000,000,000th position. The word can also mean one part out of a trillion equal parts, which is an extremely small amount. You will not hear it often in daily life, but it appears in science, math, and discussions of very large totals or very tiny measures. Think of a huge pile of a trillion pennies: the last penny added would be in that final position, while one tiny share out of all those pennies would be one part out of a trillion.
