The word "trekker" comes from "trek," a word for a long and often difficult journey. In modern English, a trekker is usually someone who travels a long way on foot, especially across mountains, forests, or other rough land. It is stronger than simply saying "walker" or "hiker" because it suggests distance, effort, and a sense of adventure.

You might see the word in travel writing, outdoor magazines, or tour ads: trekkers crossing Nepal, moving through the Andes, or following long trails in wild places. A trekker is usually prepared for a demanding trip, carrying supplies and expecting changing weather, steep paths, and many hours of walking.

There is also a historical use in South African history, where "Voortrekkers" were Boer settlers who moved inland during the Great Trek in the 1830s and 1840s. Because of that history, the word can sometimes carry an older sense of a determined traveler moving into new land, though this is not the usual meaning in everyday English now.

Some people have also used "Trekker" for a Star Trek fan, but that meaning is much less common than the outdoor one, and "Trekkie" is the better-known term. So, in most cases, if you call someone a trekker, you mean a person making a long, challenging journey on foot through nature.
