Transfiguration refers to a dramatic change in form or appearance, especially one that seems elevated, radiant, or spiritually significant. While "transformation" is a broader word, transfiguration usually suggests a change that feels revealing or glorious, not merely different.

Historically, the word carries strong religious connotations, most notably from the New Testament story of the Transfiguration of Jesus, where his appearance is miraculously changed before his disciples to reveal his divine glory. Because of this, the word often carries a sense of light, wonder, and revelation. It is not just change for its own sake, but change that seems to uncover something deeper.

However, transfiguration is not limited to religious contexts. It can also describe a powerful change in a person, an expression, a landscape, or an artistic vision. For example, a face may seem transfigured by joy, grief, or love. A plain scene might be transfigured by sunset or snow. In literature, a character may undergo an inner change that gives them a new presence or meaning.

In literature and fantasy, transfiguration is also associated with magic: the changing of one thing into another. In that use, the word keeps its sense of dramatic alteration, though the religious feeling may be weaker or absent. Even then, it still sounds more vivid and special than an everyday word like "change."

So whether it refers to a divine revelation, an emotional glow that changes a face, or a magical act of turning one thing into another, transfiguration is about a striking change that feels fuller, brighter, or more meaningful than an ordinary change.
