A transferee is a person or entity to whom a transfer is made. While we often hear the term in human resources to describe an employee moving from one department or city to another, its reach is much broader. In a general sense, whenever something of value—like property, rights, or responsibilities—is handed over, the person getting it is the transferee.

In the business world, a transferee is often a "known quantity." For instance, if a corporation moves a manager from the New York office to the Tokyo branch, that manager is a transferee. You may also see the idea in education: a student who transfers from one university to another is often described as a transfer student, and in formal contexts may be called a transferee. The idea is still the same: someone is moving into a new place while bringing an existing record with them.

In legal and real estate contexts, the term becomes more technical. If you buy a house, the seller is the transferor, and you—the one receiving the deed—are the transferee. A "transferee agreement" or "transferee liability" might be discussed in these cases to outline exactly what is being handed over and what responsibilities the new owner is taking on.

The common thread is the direction of the movement. Whether it is a physical move to a new office or a legal move of property ownership, the transferee is always the destination point of the transfer.
