US

  • /ˈtɛst/

Description

A "test" is often a school exam, but it is also much more than that. It can be any check that shows what someone knows, how well something works, or how strong something is. A chef might test a new recipe before putting it on the menu, while a sailor tests a ship before a long trip. Sometimes life tests us with problems that show our patience or strength.

You can test something in a physical way, like the brakes on your car, or in a more personal way, like testing someone's loyalty. A hard moment can be called a "test" of character because it shows what a person is really like. The word also has an old link to checking metal to see if it is pure, which fits the idea of finding out the true quality of something.
