temporarily

B2
adverb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /tˌɛmpərˈɛrəli/

US

  • /ˌtɛmpərˈɛrəli/

Description

Imagine a small shop with a note on the door. The lights are off, the chairs are stacked, and the owner has written, "Closed for repairs." You do not think the shop is gone forever. You understand that it is closed only for a limited time. That is the idea behind "temporarily." It means something happens, exists, or is true for a while, but not forever. You might leave your desk temporarily to help a coworker, or a road might be temporarily closed during construction. In each case, the situation will change back later.
