Tape is a word with several everyday uses. Most people first think of the sticky strip used to wrap gifts, seal boxes, or fix a torn page. But "tape" can also mean a material used for recording sound or video, and it is often used as a verb meaning to record something ("Did you tape the game?"). It is also part of the common phrase "measuring tape," the flexible tool used to measure length. In some situations, it appears in the idiom "red tape," which means too many official rules and delays. The context usually makes the meaning clear.

The word "tape" first meant a narrow strip of material, and that idea still sits at the center of its many uses. In the idiom "red tape," it means burdensome official rules and paperwork that slow things down.
