In some settings, it can mean rinsing or washing something with water. Most of the time, the word suggests something messy, rough, or unpleasant.

The word swill usually brings to mind something wet, messy, and not very appealing. Its oldest and most concrete meaning is liquid food for pigs or other animals, made from scraps mixed with water. From that idea, the noun also came to mean cheap, poor-quality food or drink. If someone calls a beer, soup, or coffee swill, they mean it is barely worth consuming.

As a verb, swill most often means to drink something quickly and greedily, usually with a sense of bad manners or lack of taste. The word does not simply mean "drink"; it suggests gulping, excess, and a rough or careless way of consuming something.

There is also another verb sense: to rinse, flush, or wash with water. Someone might swill out a bucket, or workers might swill a floor clean. This use is more practical and less judgmental, but it still keeps the image of water moving around something in a loose, messy way. Across its different uses, swill is a strongly negative or earthy word. It fits scenes of waste, low quality, rough habits, and anything that feels closer to slop than to elegance.
