sweat

verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /swˈɛt/

US

  • /ˈswɛt/

Description

We sweat when our bodies get hot or work hard, whether during exercise, physical labor, or moments of strong anxiety. Think of a blacksmith hammering metal, covered in sweat after hours of work, or a nervous performer breaking into a cold sweat before stepping on stage. "Sweat equity" means the effort someone puts into a project instead of money. You might say, "He put a lot of sweat into building that cabin."

The word can also be used figuratively. To "sweat bullets" means to worry a lot. And when people say "don't sweat the small stuff," they mean you should not get upset about minor problems.
