Surveillance refers to the close monitoring of a person, place, or activity, usually for the purpose of protection, investigation, control, or information gathering. It is more than just seeing something happen; it implies ongoing observation and, in many cases, systematic data collection.

Historically, surveillance meant having someone physically watch another person—think of private detectives tailing suspects in old noir movies. However, in our modern era, the scope is far broader. We live in an age of digital surveillance where our online activity, purchases, location data, and even social media posts are frequently tracked and analyzed. This can be conducted by governments (for national security), corporations (for targeted marketing), or individuals.

Context is crucial because surveillance is not inherently negative. Security cameras in a store can help prevent theft, and doctors may keep a patient under close observation to monitor a developing health condition. However, the term often carries strong connotations of privacy invasion and control, especially when it is conducted secretly or without consent.

You might hear about "mass surveillance," referring to the widespread collection of data on entire populations, or read about a suspect being placed "under surveillance" by law enforcement. Because it sits at the intersection of safety and civil liberties, the line between legitimate security and intrusive monitoring is one of the most debated topics in the modern world.
