The word "surrealist" can be both a noun and an adjective. As a noun, it refers to an artist, writer, filmmaker, or thinker connected to Surrealism, a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s. As an adjective, it describes work, images, or ideas that belong to that movement or clearly use its style. At its heart, Surrealism tries to free thought and imagination from the limits of ordinary logic. It turns toward dreams, the subconscious mind, and the irrational.

Imagine a world where everyday objects are distorted or combined in unexpected ways: a lobster telephone, a giraffe on fire, a desert landscape filled with grand pianos. That is the kind of imagery you find in surrealist art. Artists like Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Max Ernst, and Joan Miró tried to move past conscious control and reach the raw force of imagination.

Surrealism was not limited to visual art. It also shaped literature, especially through André Breton, and film, with figures such as Luis Buñuel. The movement was strongly influenced by Freudian psychology and the idea that dreams could reveal hidden parts of the human mind.

While the original movement was strongest in the early and middle parts of the 20th century, its influence is still easy to see today. When you call a painting, film, or passage surrealist, you usually mean that it uses dream logic, surprising images, or a strong sense of the unreal in a way that connects to Surrealism as an artistic tradition. In that sense, a surrealist is not simply someone making strange art; they are trying to open a different way of seeing and feeling the world.
