A surgeon is a physician who specializes in performing surgical procedures—operations that involve manually manipulating tissues within the body to treat injuries, diseases, or deformities. It's a demanding profession requiring years of rigorous training after completing medical school, including an internship, residency, and often fellowships focusing on specific areas like cardiac surgery (heart), orthopedic surgery (bones and joints), neurosurgery (brain and nerves), plastic surgery (reconstruction), and many more.

The role of a surgeon extends far beyond the operating room.
