The word "doctor" has evolved over centuries from its original meaning of "teacher" to encompass a wide range of roles. While most commonly associated with healthcare, the term's roots lie in deep expertise. A "doctor" is fundamentally someone who holds a doctorate—the highest academic degree—in a specific field of study.

In a medical context, a doctor (often called a physician) is trained to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses. This category includes general practitioners as well as specialists like cardiologists or surgeons. We use this sense of the word most often in daily life: "My doctor recommended I get more sleep."

However, the title is equally valid in academia. A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is awarded for original research in fields ranging from literature to psychology. You might hear about someone "doctoring the records" to hide a mistake or "doctoring a drink" by adding a secret ingredient.
