Subterfuge refers to deception used to reach a goal. It is the use of tricks, misdirection, or false appearances to hide what you really intend. Unlike a simple lie, it often involves a planned set of actions meant to conceal your true purpose.

The word itself comes from the Latin subterfugium, meaning "escape" or "evasion." Historically, it was often associated with military strategy; think of the feints and diversions used on the battlefield to mask a true attack. Today, it's used in a much broader sense. A master manipulator might use subterfuge to gain power, while someone trying to throw a surprise party would employ subterfuge to keep the guest of honor in the dark.

Subterfuge isn't always malicious; sometimes it is playful or harmless. However, it always involves some form of deception. You might say, "His charm was merely a form of subterfuge," implying that his kindness was not genuine. Or, "The spy relied on elaborate subterfuge to infiltrate the enemy base."

It's important to note that while lying is often part of it, that is not the whole story. It can include disguises, misdirection, false pretenses, and other carefully planned moves that create a false impression.
