The word "striptease" usually refers to a performance in which a person slowly removes clothing while dancing or moving in a way that is meant to attract and excite an audience. It is strongly linked with sensual entertainment and is most commonly used for acts in clubs, cabarets, burlesque shows, or other adult settings. The focus is not only on taking clothes off, but on doing it gradually, with timing, style, and a sense of suspense.

Historically, the word became well known through vaudeville and burlesque, where teasing performance and showmanship mattered as much as nudity. In modern use, it still usually carries an adult or erotic sense. Because of that, it is not a neutral word for simply getting undressed. If someone is changing clothes in private, you would not normally call that a striptease unless there is a playful or sexual performance element.

The word can sometimes appear in figurative language to describe a slow reveal that builds curiosity or tension, especially in writing or journalism. Even then, the image still suggests teasing and staged revelation, so the figurative use is limited and often playful.
