The word strike has a surprisingly wide range of meanings, all revolving around the idea of forceful contact or sudden occurrence. At its most basic, to strike means to hit something forcefully: "The boxer struck his opponent with a powerful jab." This can be literal, like hitting a physical object, or figurative, such as when "an idea strikes me."

However, strike is famously used in the context of labor disputes. When workers go on strike, they collectively stop working to protest unfair conditions or demand better pay. This is a powerful act intended to disrupt operations and force employers to negotiate. You might read about a "nationwide railway strike" impacting travel.

Beyond hitting and protesting, strike can also describe something happening suddenly or unexpectedly: "Lightning struck the old oak tree," or "Fear struck her heart." It can even refer to the sound a clock makes to mark the passing of time: "The church bells struck midnight."

Historically, strike was used in mining to describe finding a valuable mineral deposit, which is where we get the phrase "they struck gold!" It is also found in common idioms like "strike while the iron is hot" (meaning to act quickly while an opportunity exists) or to "strike a balance" between two opposing ideas.
