spew

To spew means to throw out or send out something with force, often in a large amount and often in a messy, uncontrolled way. Many people first think of vomiting; for example, someone might spew after a rough car ride. But the word is also used in many other situations.

Think of a geyser. It does not gently release water; it spews it upward in a sudden burst. A broken printer might spew out crumpled pages. An angry person might spew insults. In each case, the image is the same: something comes out quickly, forcefully, and without much control.

The word is often used for liquids, words, smoke, trash, or other things that seem to gush out. You might read about a factory spewing smoke, a drain spewing dirty water, or the sea spewing debris onto the shore after a storm. It fits best when the flow feels wild, dirty, excessive, or hard to stop.

It is usually not a positive word. You would not normally say a garden spews flowers, because spew almost always suggests something unpleasant, excessive, or harsh. When something bursts out in a rough, messy stream, this word is often a good fit.
