A "speeder" is usually someone driving faster than the law allows. It is the kind of word you hear in traffic reports, police stories, or roadside talk: a car races past, a siren starts up, and people say the police are after a speeder. Sometimes the word can also refer to a fast-moving vehicle or machine, but the road-traffic meaning is by far the most common. Picture Old Man Hemlock, famous for his heavy foot and pile of tickets; around town, everyone knows exactly who the local speeder is.

The word "speeder" primarily refers to a driver who is going over the speed limit. It usually has a negative tone, suggesting careless or illegal driving, and it often appears in traffic reports, police language, and everyday stories about the road. You might hear, "The officer pulled over a speeder on the highway," or, "That speeder flew past us like we were standing still." In normal modern English, this is the meaning most people will think of first.

In some cases, "speeder" can also refer to a vehicle connected with fast travel rather than to the driver alone. Older railroad usage, for example, used the word for a small motor car that workers rode along the tracks. In fiction and popular culture, it can also name a small fast vehicle, especially in science fiction settings. These uses are real, but they are less common than the everyday traffic sense.

At its core, the word points to someone or something moving unusually fast. Even so, it is not a general word for every quick person or animal. Most of the time, when English speakers say "speeder," they mean a motorist breaking the speed limit, with the other senses appearing only when the context makes them clear.
