Somnolence describes a state of drowsiness, sleepiness, or lethargy: a strong tendency to fall asleep. It is not simply being tired after a long day; it often includes reduced alertness, slower reaction times, and difficulty staying awake. The word comes from the Latin somnus, meaning "sleep."

Most people experience mild somnolence from time to time, such as during an afternoon slump or after a poor night's sleep. But it becomes more important when it starts to interfere with daily life. Doctors often use the word to describe a symptom of conditions such as sleep apnea or narcolepsy, or as a side effect of medication. It also matters in safety-sensitive settings, because marked drowsiness can make driving or operating machinery dangerous.

Somnolence is not always about choosing to sleep; it can also be a sign of an underlying neurological or metabolic problem. In medical writing, a patient may be described as somnolent when they seem unusually sleepy or only partly alert. In more literary writing, the word can suggest a dreamy, half-asleep state, sometimes caused by illness, warmth, or monotony.

So, while a touch of it can be a normal part of life, persistent or excessive drowsiness deserves attention. It may be a sign that something is disturbing the body's sleep-wake cycle or pointing to an underlying health issue.
