A solenoid is a specific type of electromagnet: a coil of wire designed to generate a concentrated magnetic field when electric current passes through it. While "solenoid" can refer to the coil itself in physics, in everyday engineering it often refers to the whole device used to create mechanical movement. The name comes from the Greek word solen, meaning "tube" or "pipe," which fits its cylindrical shape.

The basic principle is elegant: electricity flowing through a wire creates a small amount of magnetism. By winding that wire into a tight coil, that magnetic field becomes focused and powerful. This field attracts a movable metal core—often called a plunger—causing it to move linearly.

This linear motion is what makes solenoids so useful. They function as electrically controlled actuators. For example, in a car's starter motor, a solenoid helps engage a gear with the engine's flywheel to get things turning. In a washing machine, one can act like a gate that controls the flow of water. You also hear them at work in electronic door locks and pinball machines, where they provide the "kick" for the moving parts.

Solenoids are not limited to simple "on or off" actions. By carefully changing the amount of current, engineers can control the force and distance of the core's movement. Though they are often hidden deep inside a machine, solenoids are essential parts that bridge the gap between electrical energy and physical motion.
