The humble sock is a basic piece of clothing worn on the foot, usually inside a shoe. It helps with warmth, comfort, and keeping sweat away from the shoe. Socks come in many forms, such as ankle socks, crew socks, knee-high socks, sports socks, and thick winter socks. They may be plain and practical or bright and playful, and people often talk about them in everyday ways: matching socks, clean socks, wet socks, or wool socks for cold weather.

The word also has another life as a verb. To sock someone means to hit them hard, usually with a fist. For example, you might read, "He socked him in the nose." As a noun, it can also mean a hard hit: "That punch was a real sock." In a broader and less common way, it can describe something striking with sudden force, especially in expressions about being hit by a cost, loss, or problem.

The history of the word goes back a long way, but in modern English the meaning is usually easy to spot from context. Most of the time, it simply names the soft foot covering that nearly everyone wears. In other cases, it brings in the idea of a strong blow. That gives the word a small but interesting range: something soft and ordinary in one moment, and something forceful in the next.
