The word "snitch" carries a lot of weight and is almost always negative. As a noun, it refers to a person who tells on others, especially by reporting their bad behavior or illegal acts to authorities. As a verb, it means to do that reporting: to tell on someone. While "informant" can sound neutral, "snitch" usually suggests betrayal, broken trust, or telling for selfish reasons, such as trying to avoid trouble yourself.

The word has strong ties to crime and prison culture, where staying silent is often treated like a rule. In that world, a snitch is someone who cooperates with the police or gives information about other people. But the word is also common in everyday life.
