A smallholding is a small area of land used for agriculture, usually with a house, outbuildings, or both. It is bigger than an ordinary garden but smaller than a typical commercial farm. The exact size is not fixed and depends on the country or region, but the idea is simple: it is land worked on a small scale for crops, animals, or both.

The word is especially common in Britain and Ireland, where it has a strong historical connection to land reform and to giving working people access to small plots they could live on and farm. A family on such land might grow vegetables, keep hens, sheep, or a few cattle, and sell some produce while using the rest themselves. Because of that history, the term often suggests self-support, practical rural work, and a close connection between home and land.

Today, the word can still describe a working place that produces food for sale, but it is also used for smaller rural properties where people keep animals or grow food mainly for themselves. Similar ideas exist in other countries, though different local words may be used, such as homestead or hobby farm. Even so, smallholding often carries a specifically British or Irish feeling.

So when someone speaks of a smallholding, they usually mean not just a piece of land, but a small working holding in the countryside: a home, some ground, and a way of living tied to growing and keeping things on a manageable scale.
