The word "slaver" is unusual because it belongs to two very different areas of English. One sense is about saliva. As a verb, it can mean to let spit run from the mouth, much like "drool." You may also see it used for speaking in a wet, uncontrolled way, or for showing hungry, ugly excitement about something. In that figurative use, a person might seem to "slaver over" money, power, or food. As a noun, it can also mean saliva, although that use is now fairly rare and can sound old-fashioned or literary.

The other sense is historical and much heavier. In that use, a "slaver" is a person who traded in enslaved people or a ship used in the slave trade. This meaning is especially tied to the transatlantic slave trade and appears in historical writing, biographies, and accounts of naval patrols and captured ships. In this sense, the word is strongly condemnatory because it names people or vessels that took part in a brutal system of kidnapping, transport, and human exploitation.

Because these meanings are so different, the surrounding context is the key to understanding the word. In a novel, "slaver" may describe spit at the corner of a dog's mouth or a villain speaking with ugly desire. In a history text, it is far more likely to mean a slave trader or a slave ship. So the word can point either to drooling and crude desire, or to one of the darkest parts of human history.
