Slavery is a horrific system in which one person is owned or controlled by another and is forced to live and work under that person's power. It is more than forced work. It strips people of basic human rights such as freedom, dignity, choice, and often family ties. Historically, slavery has existed in many societies across the world. It has taken forms such as chattel slavery, in which people are treated as property, and other systems of severe coercion that trap people in labor and remove their freedom.

The Transatlantic Slave Trade, which forcibly transported millions of Africans to the Americas between the 16th and 19th centuries, is perhaps the most widely known example. That system enriched colonial economies while causing immense suffering to enslaved people and their descendants. Harriet Tubman's work with the Underground Railroad stands as a powerful example of resistance, helping many people escape to freedom.

However, slavery has not disappeared. Modern forms of slavery persist today, including human trafficking, forced labor, and debt bondage. In these situations, people may be controlled through violence, threats, deception, or impossible debt. These practices often target vulnerable populations, including migrants, women, and children.

To understand slavery, we have to face both its historical roots and its ongoing forms. It is a story of immense pain, but also of resistance, survival, and the long struggle for freedom and human dignity.
