The silkworm (Bombyx mori) is the larva, or caterpillar, of the domestic silk moth, an insect raised for its ability to produce silk. Unlike many insects that complete their life cycle and fly away as adults, the domestic silk moth has been bred over many centuries to be flightless and fully dependent on humans for survival.

Silkworm culture is believed to have begun in China thousands of years ago, and sericulture, the practice of raising silkworms for silk production, was a closely guarded secret for centuries. Silkworms are fed mainly on mulberry leaves and eat large amounts as they grow. When they are ready to pupate, they spin a cocoon made from a long continuous silk thread. This cocoon is then harvested, and the silk is carefully unwound to make soft, valuable cloth.

The process also raises ethical questions. Traditional silk production usually involves heating the cocoon before the moth can emerge, which keeps the thread long and unbroken. However, "peace silk" or "ahimsa silk" methods allow the moth to come out naturally before harvesting, though this leads to shorter, broken fibers.

Beyond textiles, silkworms are also used in scientific and medical research because of the way they produce proteins. They show how closely human history and insect life can become connected through domestication. So the next time you see a silk scarf or robe, remember the small caterpillar behind its thread, and the long human story that grew around it.
